Why Are My Resin Prints Curing Soft or Sticky?

Short answer: A sticky or soft resin print almost always means incomplete curing — either the part wasn’t washed thoroughly, the UV exposure was too short or too weak, or the print was left wet in solvent and the surface never polymerized. The fix sequence is: wash properly (IPA or dedicated wash solvent, 3–5 minutes with agitation), dry completely, then post-cure under UV at 405 nm for 10–20 minutes per side, rotating the part. If it’s still tacky after that, you’re under-exposing during printing — raise exposure time per layer.

  5. Raise exposure time per layer in the slicer (add 0.5–1.0 s at a time) if the part is sticky right out of the printer.
  6. Check resin temperature — cold resin (below ~20 °C) cures slower; warm the bottle in a water bath if your shop is cold.

What “Sticky Resin Print” Actually Is

Photopolymer resins cure by a UV-triggered polymerization: the printed layers polymerize just enough to hold shape during printing (called “green” or partially cured state), then a washing + UV post-cure step finishes the job. A sticky surface is uncured or partially cured monomer left on the part after that step.

Two different failure modes look similar:

  1. Uncured surface film — leftover liquid resin or solvent-thinned monomer sitting on the surface blocks UV and stays tacky.
  2. Under-cured body — the layers didn’t get enough UV during printing, so the whole part is soft, rubbery, or flexes.

In additive manufacturing terms (ASTM F42 / ISO-ASTM 52900), a resin print in this state hasn’t reached its intended final material properties — the degree of cure is below spec, which affects mechanical strength, dimensional stability, and chemical resistance. A sticky part is also unsafe to handle bare-handed: uncured resin is a skin irritant and should always be handled with nitrile gloves.

The 5 Root Causes (with fixes)

1. Incomplete washing (the #1 cause)

After printing, the part is covered in a layer of uncured liquid resin. If you don’t remove it before UV post-curing, the UV cures that residue into a tacky, soft film on the surface.

  • Symptom: Sticky/tacky surface, but the part underneath is hard. Often sticky only in recesses, holes, and undercuts where wash solvent can’t reach.
  • Cause: Short wash, dirty/worn wash solvent, no agitation, or insufficient time in the solvent.
  • Fix: Use fresh or clean wash solvent. Wash 3–5 minutes in a first bath, then a second clean bath for 1–2 minutes. Agitate or use a magnetic stirrer. For intricate geometry, use a soft brush or ultrasonic cleaner (short bursts; some resins are brittle to ultrasound). Rinse with a small spray of fresh IPA, then dry.
  • Verify: After washing and drying, the part should have a matte, not glossy, surface before you cure it. Gloss means residual resin is still there.

2. Part not dried before post-curing

Water or solvent trapped on the surface reflects and absorbs UV, blocking it from reaching the resin underneath.

  • Symptom: Patches of stickiness in droplets-shaped spots; the underside stays tacky while the top is hard.
  • Fix: Dry thoroughly with compressed air (canned air is fine), or leave the part on a paper towel to air-dry for 10–20 minutes before curing. Don’t cure a wet part.
  • Verify: No visible droplets or wet sheen anywhere before the UV step.

3. Under-exposure during printing (per-layer exposure too low)

The UV source inside the printer determines how much the resin cures per layer. If it’s too short, the layers stay under-polymerized and the whole part comes out soft.

  • Symptom: The part is soft and flexes even after washing and post-curing; small features bend; the print feels rubbery.
  • Fix: Increase per-layer exposure time in the slicer in small steps (0.5–1.0 s for standard resins, less for high-speed resins). Exposure depends on layer height: a 0.05 mm layer needs more exposure than a 0.1 mm layer because thinner layers have less resin to cure. 4. Wrong or weak UV post-cure setup

Curing stations use 405 nm LEDs. If your “UV lamp” is an old 365 nm nail lamp, a sunlamp, or a weak bulb, the energy is too low to complete cure in a reasonable time — or the wavelength doesn’t match your resin’s photoinitiator.

  • Symptom: Hard part that stays tacky no matter how long you cure; or it cures on the side facing the light but stays sticky on the other side.
  • Fix: Use a 405 nm curing station that rotates the part so all sides get equal light. Cure 10–20 minutes per side for standard resins. Check that the lamp is bright (fresh LEDs; these dim over time) and that nothing (a cup, the washing basket) blocks the light path.
  • Verify: Rotate and cure another 5–10 minutes; if the tacky side becomes hard, you had a coverage/rotation problem.

5. Cold resin or cold environment

Resin photopolymerization is temperature-dependent. Cold resin cures slower and can stay partially cured even with the “right” exposure.

  • Symptom: Prints stickier in winter or in a cold workshop; the same settings worked in summer.
  • Fix: Warm the resin bottle in a warm water bath (not boiling, not the microwave) until it flows freely, and keep the printing and curing environment above ~20 °C. Some resins specify 20–30 °C operating range.
  • Verify: A print at 22 °C shop temperature with the same settings should come out fully hard after the same wash/cure cycle.

For water-washable resins, a common sticky-part cause is that water-wash residue dries into a film on the part and blocks UV. Use an extra rinse step and wipe the part with IPA as a second stage if you’re having trouble.

When a Part Is Already Sticky

If the part is already printed and sticky:

  • Wash it again first — a sticky surface is often a wash failure, not a cure failure. Re-wash in clean solvent, dry, then re-cure.
  • Re-cure with rotation — another 10–20 minutes in the curing station usually finishes a surface film. Watch for over-curing signs: yellowing and brittleness at the extremes.
  • If it’s still soft after washing and long curing, the per-layer exposure is wrong — it’s under-cured in the body. Re-print with +0.5–1.0 s exposure. Do not try to “fix” a structurally soft part; it will not gain strength.
